While I was up at Purdue yesterday, I had lunch at a place called "Pita Pit"!
They had Gyros!! So I had one! :d
I went to Centennial graduated in 1990. Bemidji state for collage. Lived in Lino Lakes as a kid and St.Paul until I just got the house in Blaine right behind Centennial high again, guess you can never get away.
I saw State Fair and was wondering since our State Fair going on he might have went. Where did you go to school(s)????
I tried my first Gyro at the State Fair today - a nice taste. It made a great meal!
RJ, Pig's trotters used to be a popular food over here, not pickled though. When I was a kid my mum used to make brawn by boiling up a whole pig head till all the soft tissue comes out, then setting it. I enjoyed it then but I'm not sure I would now.
Good stuff here and chile peppers go good with about anything. Don't walk down wind of anyone who's just feasted on this.
Ok, if that's a Gyro then I'm in! I used to buy that lamb meat by the box! Great stuff!
Looks delicious to me :)
There's nothing like a spicy kebab with a good helping of 'mystery meat' in it :D
Can't get gyros around here - never had one.
But I may go to the state fair Monday or Tuesday, and can try them there.
(Monday and Tuesday are senior cit's days - free for us old codgers! :)

Has anyone ever had Pickled Pigs Feet?
Once at the Canadian National Exhibition, I saw a sign "Pickled Pigs Feet". I had heard of them all my life, but never saw one. So I ordered one. I got this big knarly, grisly, gruesome looking chunk of stuff! But it actually tasted quite good! When I walked through the fair chewing on the thing, my friends kept 20 feet away - they didn't want to be seen with me!
Looks good to me. I haven't had a gyro/kebab in ages even though there are a couple of good Mediterranean deli shops within a short drive of me.
There is an awesome gyro shop near where I live. Those gyros they make there could easily kill a person with their awesomeness, and their size.
....ahhhh, drooling....gyros is the same as shoarma, but shoarma is coming from muslim countries (turkey) so it's mainly made of lamb or turkey. the gyros, coming from the christian greece, it's fuckin' pork. kebab is that same lamb meat, but miced and pressed around a metal stake then roasted on the grill...while shoarma and gyros are roasted on the vertical stake. it is all fuckin' delicious, i love the falafel as well. not a fan of pork though.
Any UK town will have six or seven kebab shops, at least! Some are better than others. If you're ever in Bedford I recommend Flames, on Tavistock Street. This is one of thiers.
Make that 2 orders to go, mine with green tea.... Yeah !!
Gyros is a Greek fast food;. It is a kind of meat roasted on a vertical rotisserie. The most common fillings are tomato, onions, and tzatziki sauce. French fries are a common side dish.
The Arabic shawarma and Mexican tacos al pastor are similar to gyros, all derived from the Turkish döner kebab which was invented in Bursa in the 19th century.
the nearest place where they serve a good gyros is across the border in Hungary, some 50 km from me. not even that can stop me ;D
You're a man of taste, Slarti. It's called a kebab here in the UK, the sort that's roasted on a rotating vertical spit, then sliced off in strips. Perfect after an evening in the pub. I'm nearly drooling on the keyboard!
kebab or gyros i don't mind as long as it is hot and spicy. oh man i'm so hungry now
"Hello Boss! Large doner kebab, chilli sauce, salad?"
Lovely!
no, not a big fan of them, especially not Coke. Schweppes's is the only one i like now and then
apart from that coke it looks absolutely perfect! is that gyros? because i LOVE gyros. i bet this was uber-delicious
...that looks like doner with hot sauce on pitta bread, mixed salad with chilis and fries...it gotta be a turkish king or something.

I ate at a Pita Pit in Pittsburgh, SeaFox (say that 10 times fast.) It was not the best, but it was pretty good.
