Converting a 1:43 die cast car in to a slot car - part 1

Ok, I got a slot car set from my sister for Christmas and I want more cars for it, but rather than buy them I'll make them! :D
This is a nice 1:43 scale die cast Ford GT MkII.
Even though normally slot cars of this scale normally have a fixed guide pin and pickup braids, I've decided to go for the more fancy rotating flag type pickup with the braids on that. It's a stock Scalextric 1:32 flag pickup with a few adjustments to help it fit my needs. Next I have to make a mount for the pickup :)

I stumbled across it and read that you were waiting for parts yet. Up vote either way.
I see someone voted this up, well then I guess your keen to know how this project is going... ...well it seems to be on pause, probably until autumn (fall), but I'll be sure to update as and when anything interesting happens ;D
if you decide to do the project i'll be glad to help you if there is any need for help
update for JC: the hovercraft electronics is unbelievably simple! i suggest you read the whole article, they have provided the schematic and the source code for the project.... not just the pwm but everything was done by the pic! cool idea....
Update: The new power system for the track is done. The unregulated single voltage power supply has been replaced by a regulated multi-voltage supply. Each track can now be powered individually, both voltage and polarity, with another power supply, allowing for cars from other manufacturers to be used. I got a old micro scalextric car (1:64 scale) and it runs perfectly now :)
The car is still on hold awaiting the rear axle and transmission :(
Thanks for the info tognarth, I had a large AFX Aurora set 20 years ago but nothing else until this. I take you ran 1:32 scale models, these 1:43 seem to be a fairly new thing but allow for more track as they're slightly smaller. I see SCX do sell some 1:43, they look nice. I haven't found a local stockist for this stuff yet, but hopefully I'll get to have a look around in the next few weeks. Until then I'm getting the bits I need off eBay.
I think a 4x4 may be my next project. That or a truck and trailer :D
Hi JC, if you have a dealer near you, try to check out the SCX range of cars, which are the Spanish offshoot of Scalextric. The motor used to be mounted (still is?) in a cradle secured to the undertray with two screws. It is a slightly larger open frame motor than current Scalextric ones, but once run in pulls like mad, and may help to ease the mounting into that tray there.
I used to race a lot some years ago, and had Scalextric, SCX and Ninco cars, including a few modified and home builds, mostly 4wd. Also I think the Ninco cars used the same motor cradle, as I recall having a Ninco Alfa 155 touring car with SCX 4wd from one of their Subaru Imprezas. A blindlingly fast car, especially when teamed with a braking controller for getting into the corners pretty sharpish.
Thanks guys, I've been working on the guide mounting tonight. Made a prototype, then with a few adjustments the parts of the final piece could be made. I'll check it and glue it up tomorrow :)
I know it doesn't look like I've done much yet, but it's taken a lot of planning to find the right parts to make this project and work out how to fit them in to the original car.
My original plan was simply to fit the body of this car to an existing slot car chassis. This is what most people do, but I just didn't like the overall look of it when I mocked it up. I decided to do an all out conversion to the existing car. The front wheels and axles can stay as they are, but the rear will require a new axle that will fit a contrate/crown gear. The rear wheels will be modified to fit the new slightly larger rear axle. The chassis has to adjusted to take new rear axle, the motor and the flag pickup. I haven't yet decided which motor to use, that will depend on testing later. Further mods will be to ad front and rear lights. :)
I just posted a pic of the real car this is modeled on to cars.lumra.com :)

I have all the parts now, but I just got sidetracked in to other things! I had got as far as fitting the rear axle and gear, and the pickup is all done too. I want the fit sleeves for the axle though so I'm going to redo that and then I will fit the motor, I'll have to make a bracket/fixing for it and experiment with different motors, and it's done :)
