I'd like to spoon with Reagan. Dead or alive. So shoot me.
As the con-servatives on this page have demonstrated, the ONLY way they can praise this lying, murderous thug is to ignore ALL inconveniant facts. As they each have admitted [especially the entries by the "research 'scientist'"], they prefer their mere opinions and mere beliefs over anything factual.
"Reagan Was the Butcher of My People" http://www.thirdworldtraveler.com/Ronald_Reagan/RonaldReagan_page.html "The 8 years Reagan was in office represented one of the most bloody eras in the history of the Western hemisphere, as Washington funneled money, weapons and other supplies to right wing death squads. And the death toll was staggering - more than 70,000 political killings in El Salvador, more than 100,000 in Guatemala, 30,000 killed in the contra war in Nicaragua. In Washington, the forces carrying out the violence were called 'freedom fighters.' This is how Ronald Reagan described the Contras in Nicaragua: 'They are our brothers, these freedom fighters and we owe them our help. They are the moral equal of our founding fathers.'. . .
"Because of Reagan and his spiritual heir George W. Bush, the World today is far less safe and secure as it has ever been. Reagan in fact was an international outlaw."
"The Unholy Trinity: Death Squads, Disappearances, and Torture -- from Latin America to Iraq" http://www.tomdispatch.com/post/174873/greg_grandin_on_the_torturable_and_the_untorturable "In Latin America, the word 'disappeared' came to denote not just victimization but moral repudiation, as the mothers and children of the disappeared led a continental movement to restore the rule of law. They provide hope that one day the world-wide network of repression assembled by the Bush administration will be as discredited as Operation Condor is today in Latin America. As Greene wrote half a century ago, on the eve of the fall of another famous torturer, Cuba's Fulgencio Batista, 'it is a real danger for everyone when what is shocking changes.'"
For all of Jimmy Carter's failings as a president (and he was largely ineffective) he can't hold a candle to Dubya's sheer incompetence combined with unabashed arrogance. At least Jimmy's morals remain unquestioned whereas Dubya seems to have no moral compass at all.
Worst President Ever.
1. Peanut for brains Jimmy Carter. :-O
Worst Presidents of 20th Century (in order):
1. GW Bush
2. Ronald Reagan
3. Richard Nixon
4. Herbert Hoover

''The trade deficit is only an indirect indicator'' of the economy's health, said Laura Tyson, the former Clinton aide who now teaches at the University of California at Berkeley. In the 1980's, the trade deficit was used to bludgeon President Reagan for his ''What? Me worry?'' policies. This time around, Ms. Tyson said, ''it's consistent with all sorts of good things -- high employment, stable prices, low interest rates.''
Deficits aren't always bad
Iran contra was the Beirut hostages, Iran let theirs go the day Reagan took office.
Of course Reagan doesn't get full credit for the economic fall of Russia, Russia helped too.
I'm sure you'd be hard pressed to name any conservative who wasn't a douchebag
He did it by raising the deficit, which is a convenient short-term control. Unfortunately, he failed to tell any of his successors that it isn't meant to be a long-term economic strategy.
Iran-Contra got us the hostages.
Reagan can't take credit for the economic fall of Russia. Many before him deserve to share the credit.
He's still a douchebag in my book.
Let's hear it for loopy policies, like ending Carters double digit unemployment, cutting my taxes, lowering gas prices, reducing inflation, getting the hostages released from Iran, "Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall" etc
Worst!?!?!? one of the best!, that evil emprie line really blew me away back then having studied a little theology on my own really smart man whos comments went over peoples heads! and so accused him of being an idiot when they couldnt understand what the hell! he was talking about! and not unlike Monkeys comments! (throat clearing) :-)
Actually I consider him one of the worst along with Dubya and Nixon. He can thank those "darn Democrats" he complained about for preventing his loopier policies from going though and thus tarnishing his legacy.
I think what Kungas is trying to say, RJ, is Reagan shouldn't be worshipped like he is. I don't see 10+ related pics of James K. Polk being fawned over like the Neo-Con masturbation party you guys have set up on snaps.
My worst presidents would be Grant, Taft, GW Bush, GHW Bush, and Reagan (for his own fuck ups and enabling the previous two as much as he did). The Neo-Conservative presidents have been absolute failures. All three of them have had to end their presidency by pardoning guilty parties in illegal cover-ups of treasonous crimes. It's pretty predictable.
With your rationalization, you already believe what you want to believe. Facts mean little, obviously.
Kungas said "also considered one of the worst presidents"
So is Clinton. So are both Johnsons. So is Carter, Hoover, Nixon, Harding, both Bushes, Buchanan, Grant, Harrison, Polk, Lincoln, and others! All of these have been named as not just "one of the worst", but as the worst president ever!
You believe whatever you want to believe!
also considered one of the worst presidents. say hello to Jerry Falwell in Hell.
SUI, you really aren't worth speaking with - your facts are so screwed up I am not going to bother. Must be rough for you being black, uneducated and have an inferiority complex. I do feel sorry for you. Now, if you don't mind, I have to go check my investments which have been doing phenomenal given this wonderful economy.
dookie, good list, thanks. My response is:
Reagan served from 1942 to 1945 in the US Army Air Corps with the rank of Captain. To pass the eye test he learned that if he squinted he could read the chart.
His economic policies got us out of the horrible mess that Carter left us (remember 20% inflation? and the gas shortage?)
Your reasoning for the Grenada invasion isn't backed up by fact - the marxist coupe that violently took over the country and threatened 1,000 US medical students as well as the surrounding Caribbean countries warranted the invasion and I doubt many people would see the act as flexing muscle, much too easy of a win.
He did not take credit for the cold war, only ending it during his administration, and yes, the strength of America's economy and military technology did contribute to the fall of mother Russia.
AIDS - you are correct, his administration was utterly slow to respond. Hindsight is 50/50.
I was not aware the CIA was selling drugs to our citizens, had I known, I would have bought some ;)
Lebanon I just don't remember, so I can't comment on what you have stated.
He did end the Iranian hostage crisis, something that Carter failed miserably at doing. But, yes, at what cost? Iran/Contra was definitely a bad mark during his time.
Alzheimer's haze? He got annual physicals and wasn't diagnosed with the disease until 1994.
So, I agree with your assessment of Iran/Contra and the AID's epidemic and I appreciate your taking time to compile them for my education. Still doesn't make him a bad president in my eyes, just not a perfect one. As far as SUI's comments, they aren't worth responding to, and I apologize for comparing you to him, that was a low blow on my part and I am sorry.
Isn't it interesting that every problem that comes along during a Republican administration is 100% the President's fault, but during a Democratic administration, the President is completely blameless. That alone proves that there should never be a Republican President. I'm sure dookie and SUI will agree completely.
....because you have no list of his accomplishments...simple
Iran/Contra
Iran/Contra has links to the Iranian hostage crisis (which benefitted Reagan greatly during the '80 election), illegal international arms sales...to our enemies, and the sale of drugs to our citizens by the CIA. He pardoned everyone involved with this heinous event.
Reagan was an informer for McCarthy in the "red scare" of the 40's.
He skipped out on WW2 because of "nearsightedness"...because they didn't make eyeglasses in the '30's? He was a classic chickenhawk draft-dodger.
Reagan abandoned Lebanon and left a large faction of pro-US, christian Lebanese to be murdered like dogs by both Israel and Hezbollah.
He invaded Grenada 3 days after leaving Lebanon because it was going commie and he needed to flex some muscle, because he was a chickenshithawk, not even a chickenhawk.
"trickle down economics" and deficit spending, horseshit thievery.
ignoring the AIDS epidemic
taking credit for the cold war, even though it had been waging for 40 years.
spending the last 2.5 years in an Alzheimer's haze instead of relinquishing the presidency.
and let's not even begin with all the orwellian cowboy horseshit that fell out of his mouth regularly. If you were there, startrooper, then you know. Otherwise, it's just more revisionist shit.
I need not do that dookie, I read the article, I lived the Carter/Reagan era, and unless you point to some severe faults that overpower his achievements, I will stick to my opinion. I voted for Carter, and protested Reagan during a visit of his to MIT, so don't think that you can't educate me. I am certainly willing to learn, but you will have to teach me rather than just wave your hands and insult. The quote you are referring to was made in the light that "hero" usually implies some physical feat that goes above and beyond the usual. Someone risking his life to save another is considered a hero, many of our soldiers have been heroes, but Einstein and Newton are not considered to be heroes. You have taken it out of context. So, when you have something solid to add, please do so. I will wait.
Startrooper, why don't you make a list of Reagan's actual achievements from the Wikipedia? Then make a list of faults. Then make a list of faults with what are claimed to be his achievements. Then tell me you read the article. You really seem to be proud of your dismal attempt at reading comprehension.
Even his biographer was quoted as saying "some people are remembered as heroes without doing anything heroic."(pp). I'm sure you thought that was a glowing review.
Hey dookie, thanks for the link. Have you read it? Seems like he was a great man. I guess you did a google search and gave me the first link you came across rather than you actually being able to point to something you KNOW reflects badly on the man. And the result is you point to an article which portrays him in a good light. You're funny man. Now I understand you! You're not really a dufus, you're just acting that way to entertain everyone. Got it, I am sorry I did not realize that, I thought you were being real and it worried me that anyone could be so odd in real life. I have students that do that for laughs too. But, you might want to calm down, you sound like you are going to have a breakdown. You know, if you disagree with the wikipedia article, you can edit it. Go ahead - see how that goes. Damn, you got me rolling on the floor laughing now!
Reagan didn't "give his life for service to the US", dumbass. He had a job and he sucked at it.
Here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronald_Reagan
Read it. If you're so much of an asshole to cherry-pick anything good from that amongst the mountain of mistakes, lies, and corruption, you're not just dumb, you're a brainless ideologue.
Oh yeah, reagan was a commie informant for McCarthy, just a super douchebag.
nope, just stating facts, no insults implied. Anyone who celebrates the death of a person who has done a great deal of good for them, and doesn't even realize what good was done, is clearly ignorant. And with today's readily available information, that ignorance is not the result of exposure to fact, it is most likely the result of a low IQ. It is delightful to sicken you dookie - that makes me smile. Thank you for making me smile. Now, I have to get back to the sun. BUT, if you would like to educate me, and inform me (with factual material) of why RR was a bad president, I would be glad to listen. You must agree though that the celebration of the death of someone that gave his life for the service of the US is not an act of high morality now is it?
The plastic president.
Oh look, startrooper, here you are engaging in base insults of intelligence. That would make you not only a hypocrite, but a retarded one as well. "good day, sir", you sicken me.
Too bad you are still alive Kungas. Just goes to show that humans have begun to reverse evolution by keeping those, like you, that are mentally challenged alive. Let's hope, for humanity's sake, that you don't reproduce.
