Republifacist: If I had put a smiley there some prick would assume I was happy because these guys are dead. I use emoticons on occasion, but I felt that, when employing sarcasm, one would "cheapen" the joke... like saying "Get it? Get it? Get it?" Obviously a cheap joke is better than no joke at all, though.

My apologies to all for creating this mess. In hindsight I can say that I was much in the wrong for not considering a several key aspects to this:

First, Dave Barry writes (or wrote... sigh!) humor, so he wouldn't need a silly emoticon to signal it.

Second, we are all largely unknown quantities to each other here. Given some of the... interesting members here, one of whom may have been mentioned previously, it is understandable that what I wrote could have been taken at face value.

Finally, studies have found that in face to face conversation as much as 90% of communication effectiveness is determined by non-verbal cues. Sarcasm would certainly be part of that - signaled by ever-so-subtle gestures and inflections. I guess emoticons could be considered "non-verbal". If I had put a ^°^ , a -.- , a ;p , or a ~~ after the statement would that have been understood? I searched for "sarcasm emoticons" and that was what I came up with.

yeah, but it wasn't even sarcastically funny. it didn't make any sense at all. Mr. Barry's joke makes sense, but yours is just too far out there to even be sarcastic. it's like posting a picture of cheese and saying, "shows how much cows don't know about waffle irons!"

I always thought Oosik was smart, clever and funny. I will add sarcastic and misunderstood. But Senator, you are no Dave Barry. (I'm trying to be funny, too)

Cornman: Look up "sarcasm". It was to poke fun at people who WOULD say that legitimately. I forgot that this site is rife with them, and hence laden with people who could not distinguish sarcasm if it hit them in the face.

The joke was actually loosely plagiarized from Dave Barry, who said that the Great Depression was certainly awful - most people who lived through it look really old. Mr. Barry got a Pulitzer prize for that sort of stuff. Your sense of humor may need work.

Does anybody know why this picture taken? It obviously took much effort to get this group together for the photoshoot! And photography wasn't exactly at the effortless "snapshot" stage in 1896.

I'm not up on Russian history, but I expect the photo was intended for some political or propaganda use, such as showing pride in the military, to impress the new tsar, or to illustrate military might to scare the bejeebers out of an enemy.

I doubt that the purpose was to sell prints to all the participants to make money!

Secondly, Dookie is right: in 1896 there were no communists, but even if they had been, don't you think that war rather than their ideology is what killed "many of these guys"? Thirdly, if you saw a picture of Wold War II troops would you say "Very sad: Many of these guys are dead. Shows how badly liberating Europe from the threat of tyranny sucks"?
