Survivor

Gilchrist, Texas is totally gone - well, almost!
Hurricane Ike totally destroyed 200 homes in Gilchrist.
This surviving house was built in 2007 by a retired electrical designer. He had a Galveston, Texas, engineering firm oversee a contractor as his new house was built. The columns put the house's bottom floor 14 feet above ground, or about 22 feet above sea level. Despite that, Ike's storm surge managed to get in and devastated the interior.

This reminds me of a story I heard while in Hawaii! A woman that lives in the shadow of Kilauea! She has every piece of her house numbered, including all the frame work! When the volcano is getting ready to blow, she has a crew come out and dis-assemble the whole house, and cart it away! After it's over, she has her lot surveyed, and they re-assemble the house, right back where is was, and everything is fine!
Thanks for the update, RJ. We build homes where a storm can remove our lives...why do we do that? We build homes and skyscrapers in California and hope an earthquake won't come...why? It's a crap shoot and what we do. I and you play the odds just getting out of bed. We'll re-build and wait for the next one. My hat's off to the city of Houston, FEMA, Texas National Guard. and thousands of volunteers. A special thanks to other states in the Union that sent help. No matter what you hear, things were put in order as quickly as humanly possible. Some died helping. Life goes on. One thing I've learned in 65+yrs and that is that humanity is relentless in survival. We enjoy being on this side of the grass and we move on.
Now...back to snaps/lumra.
Before Ike there were three buildings to the right of the house's lawn, then a wider vacant lot and a forth building.
Directly behind the house, there were six buildings in the area that is now debris and water.
WoW! total disaster..... looks like Hiroshima after the nuclear bomb.
