Nicholson played it the way that director wanted it, stylish, over-the-top and serio-comic. And he did it well
This version (vision?) of the Batman saga is a whole other genre....serious, gritty and realistic, and Ledger's interpretation of the Joker was perfect for it.
I think Nicholson would be capable of pulling it off in this kind of version....He can do seething evil and insanity well,....like his characters in "Wolf".....or "The Shining"
But it still just wouldn't have fit the movie as perfectly as Ledger's Joker did.....this version of the story is epic, and so is Ledger's brilliant performance.....even Nicholson said so

The main difference between Burton and Nolan is that the latter decided to take the characters and their story on their own terms, rather than changing things for the sake of change as Burton is prone to doing.
