OK - what will replace today's DVD's?
Googling it, various people say
EVDs
Blu Rays
USB sticks/DVS
Holograph DVD
HD-DVD
Who knows?
Several years ago my brother transfered all the family's old 8 and Super8 film to VHS. Both that and then converting it to DVD was a task I am glad I didn't have to do.
Yes, JC - I was more than happy to retire! If I was younger, I would have had to go into another field.
A few years before I retired, I read that 20% of US independent TV service shops had closed in a years time! But I continued on.
The tedious re-soldering of RCA's CTC170 series board mounted tuners kept me going for a few years! But RCA didn't have the problem that Zeniths did after they were bought out by Gold Star. For years, their 27" picture tube didn't last more than 3 or 4 years! But people didn't go for the price of a new tube. Those sets were "binned", so it didn't help me. :/
RJ, I think you retired from TV repair at just the right time. I don't see a lot of business in the future because LCD TV's will just be binned for the next one, there doesn't seem to be much to fix in them :/
For you Americans:
binned = thrown in the trash.
This brings back memories, JC! This must be from about 30 yrs. ago.
I began repairing TV and electronic equipment in 1958. Early on I worked on TV sets dating from the 40's. I did service calls in the home for three bucks! Parts (mainly tubes) usually amounted to three to six dollars more.
By the time I retired 5 years ago, what changes in technology there had been! And the beat goes on.
For you Brits:
tubes = valves.
repairing = mending
But I never took sewing or plumbing kits with me! :)
I would not touch a GE electronic component if it were free these days.
34 :)
And yes I remember stuff like this :D
Vis I have also transferred some video to my PC. All I need now is a way to attach my super8 projector to my PC :D
Actually I have a plan to project the image as normal and then record it with my digital camera :)
footage of me jumping down sand dunes with my brother coming to a youtube near you soon :D
groovy...y' know, that WAS the "sheist" back then...comparable to our modern...um...you know what I mean..but cool pic flashback nonetheless, JC. b-t-w how old are you?
i am transferring all my home movies on vhs to the computer for digitizing before it's too late!!
me taking a shower, coming to a youtube near you! ;)
Has VHS completely died off yet?! I wonder when DVD's are going to be out!
That VHS format will never catch on, BetaMax is the technology of the future.
Back in the late 70's a friend of mine's Dad had a Beta recorder! It was the size of a suitcase! ;D
My crosscut saw has a couple of lasers in it, maybe I should offer a low cost eye surgery service :)
i had to wear protective goggles for a few days, couldn't see shit for a few days, but it's all crystal clear now. homer went to the wrong surgeon. :)
are you referring to his glasses? i had laser eye surgery. it was an experience i will never forget, but bye-bye glasses ;)

Thanks for the info Repub. I am not into movies, so don't keep up with the changes.
On another changing technology issue, Digital photography has great advantages now. But as a historian, I see a problem for future historians.
I can take a 120 year old photograph print and look at it. Some have faded, but most are as useful now as they were 120 years ago. But so many digital photos will likely be gone, except for those which have been transferred to some newer - or older technology. From Wikipedia: "Historians are concerned that we are creating a historical void where information and details about a given decade or era will have been lost within either failed or inaccessible digital media.
