FIB, I've been in two major hurricanes on the east coast, one in Florida (Andrew) and one in North Carolina (Hugo) and I have never met or even seen a FEMA employee.
USShulkbuster [don't make me angry, you won't like me when I'm angry!]: Wow, you lie so easily, without even shame nor guilt. Do you also say that 9/11 is not a national emergency? After all, only two cities were harmed so--following your "logic"--no national emergency occured.
The duty of FEMA is to be the FIRST responder to all major disasters in the US. This is because Federal agencies--this is pre-Bushit, of course--can do what no city nor state can do alone; they can MANAGE the situation faster, and do more in less time.
"Killed by Contempt" http://www.octanecreative.com/reinform/katrina.html#krugman2anchor "Which brings us to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. In my last column [ http://www.octanecreative.com/reinform/katrina.html#krugmananchor "A Can't-Do Government"], I asked whether the Bush administration had destroyed FEMA's effectiveness. Now we know the answer. . . .
"You might have expected the administration to reconsider its hostility to emergency preparedness after 9/11 - after all, emergency management is as important in the aftermath of a terrorist attack as it is following a natural disaster. As many people have noticed, the failed response to Katrina shows that we are less ready to cope with a terrorist attack today than we were four years ago."
http://www.truthout.org/article/william-rivers-pitt-no-one-could-have-anticipated "It is gut-wrenching, more than anything else, because of this: four days later, when questioned about his flaccid response to the catastrophe in Louisiana, Bush stated, 'I don't think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees.' Right. No one anticipated the breach of the levees except the Director of the National Hurricane Center, the Director of FEMA, and a half-dozen other experts who implored Mr. Bush to take this storm seriously a full day before the hammer dropped. . . .
"No one could have anticipated these things ... except all the people who did."
As you watch the flooding in the Midwest, have you noticed that there are no farmers running around with stolen plasma TVs or holding stolen liquor over their heads?
There's no looting or yelling,
"Where's Bush?"
"Where's FEMA?
“Where's my check?" or
"Why isn't the Government out here saving me and rebuilding my home, farm, or business?"
Likewise, I've also noticed there are no reports of any other countries coming to help or sending aid.
And where are Reverends Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton?
What a contrast !!
FIB Idiot, a hurricane is not a national emergency.
Storms are normally only an emergency possibility for the State where they make landfall. Hurricanes happen to some US States almost every year and many times the Federal Government never gets involved, and when they do get involved, it's only after a proper request from a State Governor AFTER a survey of storm damage.
The Federal Government only has a management service to offer in the form of FEMA, as one might determine by simply looking up the name "Federal Emergency MANAGEMENT Agency", that may respond to a request from a State Governor.
RJ: Wrong, yet again. In this matter, for example, the president of the United States IS responsible for ALL aspects of handling national emergencies. This also makes the president responsible for EVERYTHING that goes wrong; this is especially true when Bushit shirks his national emergency responsibilities by flying to different parts of the US--none of them anywhere even close to the Gulf Coast--to strum a guitar, eat birthday cake, and make no attempt whatsoever to fulfill his NATIONAL EMERGENCY RESPONSIBILITIES.

a large number of "capable" bus drivers actually evacuated, so they couldn't drive the buses. Stupid it sounds, but its true. They got their families the fuck out the way. Can't say I blame them.
#20 said "the Feds were in charge of evacuation" - BULLCRAP! Evacuation plans and implementation are the responsibility of the local government. The feds can not be expected to formulate or effectivly carry out disaster plans for every US city!

USShulkbuster [don't make me angry, you won't like me when I'm angry!]: Well, I checked Andrew; FEMA was there. I checked Hugo; FEMA was there. Apparently, you were in areas that did not suffer major damage.
As I said, the duty of FEMA is to be the FIRST responder to all major disasters in the US. This is because Federal agencies--this is pre-Bushit, of course--can do what no city nor state can do alone; they can MANAGE the situation faster, and do more in less time.
Bushit, yet again, has no excuses whatsoever for his utter failure to do his job.
http://www.truthout.org/article/william-rivers-pitt-no-one-could-have-anticipated "The video is gut-wrenching.
"There they sit, a whole room full of hurricane experts and disaster managers, shouting down a telephone line at George W. Bush, warning him a full day ahead of time that Hurricane Katrina is a catastrophe waiting to happen. There stands Max Mayfield, Director of the National Hurricane Center, emphatically explaining that Katrina is far larger and more dangerous than Hurricane Andrew, that the levees in New Orleans are in grave danger of being overtopped, and that the loss of life could be extreme. . . .
"And there, of course, is Mr. Bush, sitting in a dim conference room while on vacation in Texas, listening to all the pleas for immediate action on the telephone. With an emphatic hand gesture, Bush promises any and all help necessary. 'I want to assure the folks at the state level that we are fully prepared to not only help you during the storm,' says Bush, 'but we will move in whatever resources and assets we have at our disposal after the storm.' After the delivery of this promise, however, Bush goes mute. No questions, no comments, no concerns. As if to foreshadow what the people of New Orleans received from their leader, Mr. Bush finishes the conference by delivering a whole lot of nothing. . . ."
