yes, we are officially doomed my friends

the LHC (Large Headron Collider) is ready to fire it's first proton burst on September 10th.

not everybody is happy about it and neither am i

That was pretty awesome, Slarti. I'm not worried about this thing at all. I don't know if this is sad, but I had never heard of it until Wednesday.
LHC live webcam!

You are half right Corno! The people that don't know how certain things work, think this will end the World, we didn't land on the Moon, WTC was an inside job, etc.
When we REALLY need to worry about the World ending is when paris hilton memorizes another line on her own! ;p
Cornman, I think you have a duff batch of scientists there, throw them away and get some fresh ones :)
let's see, average people using common knowledge think that this device will end the World. The scientists who built it and who are intimately familiar with its operation also believe that it will end the World, and that is precisely the reason they are running it. Right?
I've said it before, but thank God for the English channel! ;-)
let's see... how dying nowadays?? Nuclear war, a global/worldwide terrorist attack, a nutural collapse, a meteor or a micro-black-hole?? I'm a waiter, what do you want me to serve you/what's your order?? Of course, everything is under security, that's only theories, we know we all live in a savety world "Losing (mind) in the Sky with Diamonds"!! :D :D :D "That's all folks (fucks)!!"
He's a wonderful man with a fantastic sense of humour :)
The LHC will be used to produce particles that exist naturally at random at any time here on earth and elsewhere in the universe for fractions of a second. The whole point is that by producing them in a fixed position they can then be studied :)
Yes I admire Mr. Hawking too! I even have "A Brief History Of Time" I just don't think this machine will cause any black holes! micro, or otherwise!
Hawking is indeed a genius, but if he's running Windows he could have made an fatal error ;D
Almost forgot JC! ;D
Your watching too much Sci-Fi there, Slarti! ;)
Zues, the carpet thing might work! Things get stuck in carpet all the time! It will absorb the radioactive material, and no vacuum cleaner will ever get it out! :D
I've got quite a few cloths on the Duck and Cover label...
I still remember the 1970's public information leaflets that said in the event of a nuclear attack, place a foam backed carpet over a dining table and sit underneath. Who needs a missile defence system???? We just need to open a chain of Carpetright stores along the Polish border!
micro black holes are going to appear very probably, but they'll evaporate almost instantly if Steven Hawking is right, and he is a genius for heaven's sake
Last I heard, they fired the beam one direction! They will go the other way later on! Not to worry! I've got a tinfoil hat to protect me from the morons that think this will make a mini black hole! :)
Nothing happened? Then why did a portal to an parallel universe open in zeus' basement? Don't look now but the lizard men have arrived.
Finally! Something good to watch!
This was in todays paper! It probably won't even turn on!
Cheers for the link JC, looking forward to the end of the world, theres been bugger all on telly this week!
Apparently hair thin protons will whizz around the 17 mile ring 11,000 times a second, and 600 million collisions a second. Wow, I'm counting LIVE!!
You can watch the end of the universe live here, only about 12 hours to go...

LOL, JC! :D
Come on people! Do you really think that man has the power to make a mini black hole?!?!

Thanks Wu-Tang. That's about what it would look like but my odds were off. It's really like 40 to 1.
This is no big deal! I've got one in the basement! Every time I turn it on though, the neighbors houses jump off the ground! It's fine, everything's ok, no biggie! Oops!! =S
This is in the wrong section, can someone put this in the "Not Safe To Work" site please ;)
very good Wu-Tang :D , let's hope this is not how it'll end
Some are concerned it will create micro-black holes.
Supposedly these purely theoretical singularities would of course be close to infinitely dense but also unfathomably small and would dissipate instantly.
They say the odds of such a singularity even forming much less sustaining itself long enough to increase it's mass by swallowing europe followed by the Earth, all of mankind and everything we've ever known are pretty slim... ...Like 30 to 1 or something. I'll take that bet! I'll put my money on progress every time.
What are you worried about slarti? It'll be fine, what could go wrong... :D
BTW, the whole LHC thing is just a lie! I can exclusively reveal that this is actually a huge Flux Capacitor to transport us to the future so we can all play on hoverboards :D
